Posted by Steve on 3/8/2004, 11:31 am The purpose of this new law is purported to be to combat the effects of second hand smoke. However, one side effect has been that a number of businesses have had to curb their budget for entertainment due to the decline in revenue, or in some cases close altogether. The State of Maryland as well as the District of Columbia are now considering legislation that would ban smoking in all establishments statewide. Smokers vs non-smokers. It's an interesting issue. Or, is the issue more one of government vs "the people"? Is this really as big an issue for non-smokers as we are given to believe? Let's find out. We've tried to provide as many varied opinions as possible (we're only allowed 10) for you to vote on. Your name is NOT recorded in the poll...everyone is kept strictly confidential...even from us. We'd also like to see some replies posted with your additional thoughts on this subject, beyond the scope of the poll. How do you feel about it? Is it worth risking your favorite establishments stopping entertainment, or going out of business, to protect your health and not smell like a smokestack when you get home? Are the dangers of second hand smoke as real as they are purported to be? We'll soon see...

As you may be aware, Montgomery County recently generated a lot of controversy by instituting a ban on smoking in all restaurants and bars, (although there really aren't any bars in Montgomery County since by law 50% of their business has to be food...but I digress).
