I witnessed a SUP at Lani's on 6-8 ft swell, 15-20 foot faces, helmet, paddle, goes way deep, takes off on a set wave, and falls off. Now there's a canoe sized board dragging him thru the line up. If it hits somebody it could be serious. On the other hand there's a lot of good stand up surfers in Hawaii that do ok. Use your head, be courteous, and realize paddling a boat with a lever is a big advantage over hands alone. I would think there's plenty of spots in N Cal and Oregon where you can do this sport without sitting in a crowd.
