Looking for gggrandfather who may of been in the civil war

I am trying to find out if my great great grandfather Aaron Lake was in the colored regiment of the civil war, He was of Indian heritage and from what I understand at that time all people with color to their skin were considered colored, if they were not of the white race....how would I find out if he was among the colored soldiers who fought in this war. I know in 1893 he lived in Lambertville NJ, when he and his wife gave birth to my great grandmother Sadie Lake.....any info would be most helpful and appreciated.
