Answer: For two decades, 10% of all electricity consumed in the United States came from Russian nuclear warheads. Under the Megatons to Megawatts Program, Russia agreed to convert 500 tons of bomb-grade uranium into nuclear fuel, and the U.S. agreed to purchase it to sell to commercial power plants. The program reduced stockpiles of nuclear bomb-grade materials while creating a valuable, clean resource. When the 20-year program concluded in 2013, about 20,000 nuclear warheads were put out of commission. The Russians made around $17 billion, and the U.S. power plants got the uranium at a good price.
