Answer: The first known stapler originated in 18th-century France and was specifically crafted for King Louis XV. Each staple was meticulously engraved with the insignia of the monarch. Legend has it that these ornate staples were even crafted from gold and encrusted with precious gemstones. As the use of paper grew prevalent, a pressing need for an efficient paper fastening device emerged. Modern staplers can be traced back to a patent filed by Henry R. Heyl in 1877 for the first machine capable of both inserting and clinching a staple in a single motion.
