It's good to have cash, in case of an emergency, too. Sometimes, say in the case of an earthquake, cash registers may not be working, and the only way to get gas, food, and so forth, is with cash.
That makes sense, having certain denominations for various things.
That's excellent about the car payments. Definitely, the more that you can put down on something, the better off you are.
When Ds got his new car this summer (or lose his job) I told him that he was getting a lot more summer work in than usual, thus a larger paycheck. I suggested that he put away car payments each month for the slower months, so that he could make those payments during the winter, when not much was coming in, comparatively speaking. There are strategies. Yours was excellent.
