In fact, a lot of what we did depended on it. Our naval sails, uniforms, etc.
In the 90's, cloth made from hemp, which I think that people confuse with it's psychoactive cousins, started making a comeback.
I think that it's a good plant to grow because it doesn't need the sprays to keep it bug-free, grows extremely well, etc.
The best cooking apron that I ever saw - the type that covers your entire front - was made from hemp. An entire restaurant's kitchen staff wore them.
I'd not touched fabric made from hemp before that. It was super durable, but not rough feeling, held up well to washings, and was a pretty blue. :-)
