" Lupeta "
Her world would fit way back in time
'The People' roamed the land
The quiet soul that lived within
She trod the desert sand
Her eyes and hair were black as night
Much like the raven's wing
Joy could bring a low sweet laugh
When hearts began to sing
She seldom wasted words
But said alone what's due
Purebred Ute, Utah-born
Those eyes could cut through you
Though slight in stature
Charmed, she stood and calmed the stallion, wild
Lupeta, not quite a woman
Yet to wise to be a child
As heat rose from the desert floor
Blue roan trembled from the stress
We watched her touch her hands to him
Then smooth her cotton dress
He shuddered there, she softly spoke
Then in the creek he laid
Black eyes met across the space
But neither was afraid
With little hands she dipped right in
The tepid stream, more swift
'Til she had cooled him
Then he stood and gave to her a lift
This might have proved to be a fluke
But it happened time and again
Her spirit reached and touched each beast
And she disdained most men
Her silence made it seem to some
Her thinking might be slow
She studied all, before each act
And did it, not for show
But for her, right from birth
She'd judge a horse or man
She'd check his heart and take no hurt
Her trust tried as she can
She mounted swift, bareback she rode
On any beast she chose
The love she shared with all she touched
Came from her mother, Rose
From the 'People's land she came
To claim Rose as her Mother
She watched and learned the white child's world
Forgetting not the other
Few words she said, just worked with Rose
As time flowed quickly past
Her new dad left the two of them
They held each other fast
She went to school, this Shaman child
As more time passed them by
When Rose remarried, she stayed there
Soon heard a baby's cry
The joy of family melded them
Lupe's love and life was strong
Another babe came there to live
Nothing could go wrong
Young woman now
Lupe showed romance manifest
A beau, a move, just down in town
The changes seemed quite blest
Then death claimed Lupe's Grand-dad
Rose's cowboy-father, tall
Left a vacant spot within her heart
She missed him most of all
Now unexplained, no signs to send
Lupe left Rose too
And went to ride with her Grandpa
Through skies of cobalt blue
Farewell, Shaman Woman
We'll catch up to you up there
We'll know you by the horse you ride
And by your black and shiny hair.
