Desert Songbird
Living on the canyon wall high above the town
Music fills the heated air but still I won't go down.
No drinks to set ablaze my skill, my joy is to sing
Up here, I fill my heart with God--
And yodel to my King.
A small crowd gathers on the flat Where children used to skate--
A weekly hoedown, from the sound; The sun goes down, it's late.
Quietly and swift I go- I flit from stone to stone
Then I slip softly through that crowd-I love to be alone.
I have no wings, no feathers, still A songbird caught in flight--
Their music catches at my heartAnd my voice fills the night.
Unseen, My voice takes up the tune These joyful people play
I sing along beneath the moon-My hidden self betray.
Quiet, first, then swells the air-my voice melds with the notes
That rise from strings and raise with wings; the ballads long since wrote.
Suddenly I see no crowd, I'm singing for just me; They stand and listen quite in awe to a songbird just set free.
