"We have concluded that when the principle of racial division (i.e. phyletism) is juxtaposed with the teaching of the Gospel and the constant practice of the Church, it is not only foreign to it, but also completely opposed, to it. We reject and condemn racial division, that is, racial differences, national quarrels and disagreements in the Church of Christ, as being contrary to the teaching of the Gospel and the holy canons of our blessed fathers, on which the holy Church is established and which adorn human society and lead it to Divine piety. 2. In accordance with the holy canons, we proclaim that those who accept such division according to races and who dare to base on it hitherto unheard-of racial assemblies are foreign to the One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church and are real schismatics." I am happy this pope has stated the Vatican's true position toward Orthodoxy. We can finally end all of the namby-pamby dialogue describing the two lungs of the church.
We now know that when the Roman Catholic church speaks about unity between the churches what they really mean is they are expecting Orthodoxy will submit to the authority and supremacy of the pope. The ecumenists on both sides must now come to grips with the truth and accept unity is not going to happen in the forseeable future.
The Orthodox leaders of the world should now focus on Orthodox unity. This unity should include discussions with our Oriental Orthodox brothers and sisters in Christ. We have much more in common with them.
Our ecclesiology and spirituality is much more aligned with them than we ever were with western Christianity.
