Fr. David,
Tamara and I have had fun talking about the attitudes of the "elders" (our parents...ages 65 to 80) toward Confession. I know in the Greek church, it's not unusual for adults of that age to NEVER go to Confession. And the answers you get (at least the ones I've heard) are hilarious..."What did I do...I haven't done anything bad...why should I go?"
It's clearly a practice that was never instituted. Now that I'm in the OCA, I've been taught, and have begun to appreciate the role of Confession in spiritual health (our bishops might consider doing the same...but that's another story eh?).
Anyway...in light of your recent experience, I'm wondering if this might be a great tool in bringing cradle Orthodox back to the faith...turning them from 2/3rd generation cradle (generally with one foot out the door) Orthodox into what we call "reverts"?
Any advice?
Best Regards,
Dean
