"We have concluded that when the principle of racial division (i.e. phyletism) is juxtaposed with the teaching of the Gospel and the constant practice of the Church, it is not only foreign to it, but also completely opposed, to it. We decree the following in the Holy Spirit: 1. We reject and condemn racial division, that is, racial differences, national quarrels and disagreements in the Church of Christ, as being contrary to the teaching of the Gospel and the holy canons of our blessed fathers, on which the holy Church is established and which adorn human society and lead it to Divine piety. 2. In accordance with the holy canons, we proclaim that those who accept such division according to races and who dare to base on it hitherto unheard-of racial assemblies are foreign to the One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church and are real schismatics." St Alban and St Sergius Fellowship Conference (Jun 4-8)

This summer from Wednesday, June 4 to Sunday, June 8, 2008, St Vladimir’s Seminary will be hosting a conference of the Fellowship of St Alban and St Sergius to mark the 80th anniversary of the Fellowship. This conference is open to the general public and has the theme of “Rome, Constantinople, and Canterbury: Mother Churches?”

2008-sass-chapel.jpg The conference will explore Rome, Constantinople, and Canterbury and how each plays a role of primacy over the local Roman Catholic, Orthodox, and Anglican churches around the world. Questions such as “how is primacy understood among and between the churches themselves” and “what role does communion with a ‘mother church’ play in establishing the identity of a local church” will be discussed. In addition, there will be workshops, plenary sessions, and worship services.

Some of the keynote speakers include:

    * Metropolitan Kallistos (Ware) of Diokleia,
    * Metropolitan Philip (Saliba) of the Antiochian Orthodox Christian Archdiocese of North America
    * Bishop Hilarion (Alfeyev) of Vienna and Austria, Russian Orthodox Church
    * Bishop Keith Ackerman, Diocese of Quincy
    * The Very Rev. Patrick Henry Reardon, Senior Editor, Touchstone Magazine
    * The Very Rev. John H. Erickson, Professor, St Vladimir’s Seminary
    * The Rev. Richard John Neuhaus, Editor and Chief, First Things Magazine
    * The Rev. Ralph T. Walker, SSC, North American Master, Society of the Holy Cross

The Fellowship of St Alban and St Sergius, founded in 1928, exists to work and pray for greater understanding and cooperation between Christians, particularly Anglican and Orthodox. This conference is open to the public and anyone interested may register; however, registration and accommodation are limited.
