This morning, as the monks of Holy Ascension Monastery were preparing for services, a fire broke out in a corner dormitory of the third floor. Smoke detectors had alerted one of the monks to the fire. The monks at first attempted to put the fire out with fire extinguishers..but the fire spread very quickly.
They called 911, and evacuated the building.
The Fire Department arrived, and contained the damage to three rooms on the third floor, although there was significant water and smoke damage throughout the three floors below the dormitory.
No one was hurt - and the worship areas of the building were not affected - the Sunday services proceeded at St Raphael without interruption.
As this is written, Fire Dept inspectors are completing their walkthrough. Insurance adjusters will be on site Monday to begin the process of recovery an rebuilding.
Respectfully submitted,
