"We have concluded that when the principle of phyletism (i.e. ecclesiastical nationalism) is juxtaposed with the teaching of the Gospel and the constant practice of the Church, it is not only foreign to it, but also completely opposed, to it. We decree the following in the Holy Spirit: 1. We reject and condemn racial division, that is, racial differences, national quarrels and disagreements in the Church of Christ, as being contrary to the teaching of the Gospel and the holy canons of our blessed fathers, on which the holy Church is established and which adorn human society and lead it to Divine piety. 2. In accordance with the holy canons, we proclaim that those who accept such division according to races and who dare to base on it hitherto unheard-of racial assemblies are foreign to the One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church and are real schismatics." Dear George,

I never turn down prayers...but do not worry about my "hating" this particular religious leader...and please do not confuse "disappointment" with "hatred."

I honestly do not respect him enough to hate him.

On the other hand, I feel a tremendous sense of disappointment in the EP. I grew up under a picture of Patriarch Athenagoras...HE was one of the great religious leaders of our time.

When I consider the things that might have been possible in the Orthodox oecumene under able leadership (read - ecumenical, i.e. not parochial) in this century when communism fell, Eastern Europe returned to the community of nations, when unity was clearly possible in North America...when I think of the things that might have happened and did not - I just cringe.

I am just reminded of the comments of those in the latter days of Byzantium, who continually remarked that they were being punished for their sins (God presumably using the Turks to punish the Romans).

We must have sinned a lot to deserve leadership like this.

In any case, I appreciate your prayers.

    Best Regards,
    Dean
