Pope Benedict XVI met with Patriarch Theofilos of Jerusalem during his visit to the Holy Land on May 15, 2009. This meeting was a part of Pope Benedict's outreach plan of maintaining a harmonious spiritual relationship with Orthodox Christians, with the goal of bringing to fruition the Catholic and Orthodox Churches united in one Christian Church.
The Catholic and Orthodox Churches split apart in 1054 in what has been referred to as the Great Schism.
Also on May 15, 2009 -- the final of his five-day visit to the Middle East -- Pope Benedict visited the Church of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem's Old City, which is believed to be the site of Jesus' crucifixion, burial, and resurrection.
When he entered the structure inside the Church marking the site of Jesus' tomb, the Pope knelt alone for several minutes with his hands clasped.
After leaving the Church, Pope Benedict assured his followers in the Holy Land that peace is possible. Shortly thereafter, the Pope boarded an airplane for Rome at Israel's international airport.
