"We have concluded that when the principle of phyletism (i.e. ecclesiastical nationalism) is juxtaposed with the teaching of the Gospel and the constant practice of the Church, it is not only foreign to it, but also completely opposed, to it. We decree the following in the Holy Spirit: 1. We reject and condemn racial division, that is, racial differences, national quarrels and disagreements in the Church of Christ, as being contrary to the teaching of the Gospel and the holy canons of our blessed fathers, on which the holy Church is established and which adorn human society and lead it to Divine piety. 2. In accordance with the holy canons, we proclaim that those who accept such division according to races and who dare to base on it hitherto unheard-of racial assemblies are foreign to the One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church and are real schismatics." Russian Orthodox Church Consecration in Rome Portrays Ecumenism

Posted by George Patsourakos on 5/29/2009, 6:08 pm

The first Russian Orthodox Church to be built in Rome was consecrated on May 24, 2009, by Metropolitan Valentin of Orenburg and Buzuluk, with the blessing of Patriarch of Moscow and all of Russia Kirill, according to the Coptreal website.

The Church of Great Martyr St. Catherine was built on a hill, near the Russian embassy residence.

Among those attending the ceremony were Svetlana Medvedeva, wife of the Russian President; Yuri Luzhkov, Mayor of Moscow; Alexey Meshkov, Russian Ambassador to Italy; and several other Russian dignitaries.

Also present were representatives of the Roman Catholic Church, including Walter Cardinal Kasper, President of the Pontificial Council for Promoting Christian Unity.

The construction of this Orthodox Christian Church is significant, because it is located in Rome, which serves as the center of the Roman Catholic Church.

The fact that several Roman Catholic clergymen also attended this ceremony portrays a rapprochement of Christian ecumenism -- one in which Catholicism and Orthodoxy may soon be united into one Christian faith.
