On June 28, 2009, Turkish Culture Minister, Ertugrul Gunay, announced that Turkey will reopen the Greek Orthodox theological school on the island of Halki, off Istanbul, according to the CNN website.
"Both my personal conviction and the general inclination I see is that the school will be reopened," Gunay said.
The Culture Minister explained that authorities were grappling with "the technical problem" on whether the seminary should have the status of a university or a vocational high school.
This century-old seminary was closed in 1971, resulting in the Eastern Orthodox Church -- which has its headquarters in Istanbul(Constantinople) --losing its only facility to train clergy in Turkey.
When U.S. President Barack Obama visited Turkey and addressed the Turkish Parliament in April, 2009, he strongly urged Turkey to reopen the Orthodox seminary on Halki.
Turkey has also been told by the European Union -- which it has been struggling to join -- that its reopening of the seminary on Halki Island would be a prerequisite for Turkey's membership in the EU.
