"We have concluded that when the principle of phyletism (i.e. ecclesiastical nationalism) is juxtaposed with the teaching of the Gospel and the constant practice of the Church, it is not only foreign to it, but also completely opposed, to it. We decree the following in the Holy Spirit: 1. We reject and condemn racial division, that is, racial differences, national quarrels and disagreements in the Church of Christ, as being contrary to the teaching of the Gospel and the holy canons of our blessed fathers, on which the holy Church is established and which adorn human society and lead it to Divine piety. 2. In accordance with the holy canons, we proclaim that those who accept such division according to races and who dare to base on it hitherto unheard-of racial assemblies are foreign to the One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church and are real schismatics." Hey, I am very glad that Metropolitan Jonah as the chutzpah to reach out and lay it on the line like he did. He certainly did not waffle or mince words, particularly on issues like Calvinism. But from reading the reactions at the blog sight, he evidently offended some members of ACNA. In this I am less concerned about the differences between the two churches than the differences within their "one" church. The one thing they really would have to give up is their willingness to redefine themselves every time they are challenged. Frankly they simply have to make a stand and stick with it. Besides the Calvinist/Catholic divide, another case in point is this Archbishop Duncan's unwillingness to even deal with the rather basic issue of the ordination of women, preferring that "God sort it out". Well, I'm sorry but God "sorted it out" some time ago, it is just up to those in spiritual authority to be willing to face up to it and teach it. ACNA obviously ain't there yet. If they really can't unite within themselves with a common and consistent theology, they are not going to commune with the Orthodox any time soon.
