David-
With all respect to your roots, as well as +Jonah, the events I was addressing pertained to Anglican clergy jumping ship from their denomination in a time of turmoil (ordination of women, the virtually agnostic teachings of Bishop Spong) and being received without reservation or catechesis of any significance. These were people fleeing what they objected to in the Episcopal Church, more than seeking Orthodoxy.
And you are correct in saying, "If the Church had its act together", as there was little or no thought applied to the willy-nilly acceptance of these disaffected Episcopalians. In the aftermath of the problems created by this, a rarely enforced requirement for former Episcopal clergy to attend one year at an Orthodox seminary was put in place. But no effort was put in place to understand the idea of a denomination that is comfortable with heresy (in terms of its own stated beliefs) in its ranks, and how to communicate to inquirers that such is not the Orthodox way.
