I agree that Mr Schaeffer is mixing religion with politics a bit too freely, which in the case of Russia, is easy to do. His mix, however, does go way too far.
Eliminate any reference to Orthodoxy, and focus on Russia vs "The West" (whatever that is) and there is a valid point. Georgia did get in bed with the Bush administration, and the Bushies did woo the former satellite states to build a wall around our old archenemy.
There has been, however, obvious involvement of the Church in furthering the aims of the Russian civil government, and not just in the arena of faith and morals. Of course, the state reciprocated with the passage of the "Religious Practices Act", which serverely limits the formation and groth of churches other than the Russian Orthodox Church.
