On July 9, 2009, the Archdiocesan Synod of the Antiochian Orthodox Christian Archdiocese of North America was convened in a special meeting by telephone conference, and all seven hierarchs who are members of the Synod were in attendance.
The Archdiocesan Synod, by a two-thirds majority, approved that effective immediately the title of Bishop is to be used by American Antiochian Bishops.
As such, American Antiochian Bishops have the role of assistant to the Metropolitan in the administration of a unified Antiochian Archdiocese.
The above information was obtained from an Archpastoral Directive of Metropolitan Philip, Metropolitan of the Antiochian Orthodox Christian Archdiocese of North America, sent to all clergy, members of the Archdiocese Board of Trustees, and Parish Councils of the Archdiocese.
