"We have concluded that when the principle of phyletism (i.e. ecclesiastical nationalism) is juxtaposed with the teaching of the Gospel and the constant practice of the Church, it is not only foreign to it, but also completely opposed, to it. We decree the following in the Holy Spirit: 1. We reject and condemn racial division, that is, racial differences, national quarrels and disagreements in the Church of Christ, as being contrary to the teaching of the Gospel and the holy canons of our blessed fathers, on which the holy Church is established and which adorn human society and lead it to Divine piety. 2. In accordance with the holy canons, we proclaim that those who accept such division according to races and who dare to base on it hitherto unheard-of racial assemblies are foreign to the One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church and are real schismatics." Re: North American Serbs implementing full unity

    Hi Leo,

I participated in discussions with one of the Serbian Orthodox bishops who was involved in the re-unification.

While I am still not completely sure of what caused the schism to begin, I can tell you that I walked away very impressed with the way the rift was healed. There appears to be very little of the animosity that I have witnessed in other jurisdictions. At the same time, it was obvious to me that the leadership has approached the reunification very pastorally, almost therapeutically - viewing it and treating is as a healing process.

Although I am no expert, and do not claim to be, I can tell you that I walked away confident that the process was in good hands...that the Holy Spirit was at work, and that the leadership, both locally and in Serbia, seemed very sensitive to the needs of the archdiocese.

Never was I more impressed and convinced that leadership makes all the difference....good leaders can inspire people to accomplish the impossible. It was a pleasant contrast to what we are witnessing in some of the other jurisdictions right now.

    Just a few random thoughts..

    Best Regards,
    Dean
