Leo,
The force of Patriarch Pavle's personality and spirit was evident during our discussions.
I will probably mess the details up...but apparently the patriarch was one of the lone dissenters when the American archdiocese was excommunicated.
As such, he had the ultimate in credibility when the rapproachment was contemplated...both in the eyes of the Old Country, as well as here in America. However badly I mangled the story, it was absolutely apparent that wanting to be a member of the church headed by Patriarch Pavle had no small part in the reunification.
I was also given a booklet that was published at the time of the reunification. It contains Patriarch Pavle's Homily at the Liturgy of Reunification...it is pretty moving, and another example of what you said..."if anyone could walk on water." It also provides a stark contrast to the gangland-style tactics that we just witnessed in Palm Springs.
Not sure how to post the .pdf file, but I'd be happy to email it to you if you like. Just email me.
Best Regards,
Dean
