The Akathist to
St. Moses the Black
BROTHERHOOD OF ST. MOSES THE BLACK
METROPOLITAN DETROIT CHAPTER
We cordially invite you to join us on Thursday, August 27, 2009 as we learn of the life
of St. Moses the Black through the prayerful akathist service. An akathist is a hymn
that recalls the life of a saint, holy event, or one of the persons of the Holy Trinity.
St. Moses the Black was an Ethiopian who lived in the 4th century. He is a revered
Desert Father whose spiritual journey is an inspiring story of the Christian struggle.
A former slave and notorious gang leader, St. Moses repented of his sinful life by
God’s grace, and lived in an Egyptian desert monastery. St. Moses became known for
his humility, wisdom, and power over demons. He was ordained a priest, and
eventually became an abbot of a monastery with 75 disciples. St. Moses is
recognized as the patron saint of African-Americans. His life and victory in Christ is
remembered on August 28th.
