Hi Leo,
I'm guessing that the canon, as originally conceived, was not exclusive, and applied only to those barbarous regions specified, not to the whole world.
On the other hand, I always wondered - if Antioch was Patriarch of all the East..and if the ancients knew the world was round (they did), then at some point "the East" would meet "the West"...and there would be a problem.
I think the answer is really that the canons were explaining what was going on in the known world....and certainly not the entire universe.
Of course, then came Meletios Metaxakis....never underestimate the creative imagination of a frustrated Greek.
I'm sure it's only a matter of time before canon 28 is applied to other planets as well.
