"We have concluded that when the principle of phyletism (i.e. ecclesiastical nationalism) is juxtaposed with the teaching of the Gospel and the constant practice of the Church, it is not only foreign to it, but also completely opposed, to it. We decree the following in the Holy Spirit: 1. We reject and condemn racial division, that is, racial differences, national quarrels and disagreements in the Church of Christ, as being contrary to the teaching of the Gospel and the holy canons of our blessed fathers, on which the holy Church is established and which adorn human society and lead it to Divine piety. 2. In accordance with the holy canons, we proclaim that those who accept such division according to races and who dare to base on it hitherto unheard-of racial assemblies are foreign to the One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church and are real schismatics." Tom, regarding the "mets" what other explanation is there that makes sense? BTW, I got that explanation from more than one GOA priest so it's what's au courant in their circles.

As far as the Charter is concerned, it most defiantely was a scandal, otherwise there wouldn't have been a lawsuit and an exodus of people from the GOA. Plus, it completely went against the incorporation laws of New York State. Just try your parish doing that with the Secretary of State in your own state. (We had to move and earth to get our church's name changed with the corporation commission, and I'm talking about addint the "Inc." to it, not changing its patronal name (which remained the same).

As far as the +Spyridon thing, you're right, it's complicated, but it started more or less on another scandal (the homo priest thing at HC).

As for the ROCOR/OCA thing, that makes no total sense. ROCOR and the OCA are in communion and bishops from both bodies have concelebrated so I really don't know what +Hilarion's point is. some of us are chalking it to a bad translation. Otherwise he makes absolutely no sense whatsover. (I don't want to acuse him of mendacity but the plain words would lead one to that conclusion.)

As far as Fr Hans and AOI is concerned, I can't speak for him. Personally, I think -Philip's days as an effective primate are numbered. I've said it and I'll say it again, he has NO moral authority whatsoever.
