"We have concluded that when the principle of phyletism (i.e. ecclesiastical nationalism) is juxtaposed with the teaching of the Gospel and the constant practice of the Church, it is not only foreign to it, but also completely opposed, to it. We decree the following in the Holy Spirit: 1. We reject and condemn racial division, that is, racial differences, national quarrels and disagreements in the Church of Christ, as being contrary to the teaching of the Gospel and the holy canons of our blessed fathers, on which the holy Church is established and which adorn human society and lead it to Divine piety. 2. In accordance with the holy canons, we proclaim that those who accept such division according to races and who dare to base on it hitherto unheard-of racial assemblies are foreign to the One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church and are real schismatics." The Road to Unity

From Vision to Action: Orthodox Christianity in America

    DATE: October 29-31, 2009

    LOCATION: Antiochian Village, Ligonier, PA

American Orthodox Christianity is already unified in doctrine and fellowship but we are not unified as jurisdictions. Orthodox Christianity can flourish in America and our Orthodox faith can give much to our nation in return. The timing of the OCL Fall Meeting is between the pre-conciliar meetings taking place in Europe. The June Meeting established a process for unity in America. The Patriarchs bless the establishment of Episcopal Assemblies to begin to define a structure of a unified, self-governed church. Clergy and Laity are urged to participate and provided input. Let us reason together at the OCL Fall Meeting to promote unity in America.

The Road to Unity is blessed by Met. Philip, Met. Jonah, and Met. Christopher. Keynote will be delivered by Met. Jonah. Other hierarchs attending include Abp. Nathaniel of Detroit and Bp. Thomas of Charleston, and the list is growing.

    Topics:

Orthodox Unity at Work and In Service; Unity at Many Levels; An Accountable Unified Orthodox Church of Tomorrow; Orthodoxy and American Culture; Youth; Orthodox Communication; The Great and Holy Council.

    Panelists & Participants

Newly-elected Metropolitan Jonah, Primate of the Orthodox Church in America, will present the keynote address. His unique vision for establishing Orthodox unity in America has stimulated much discussion in national Orthodox circles. Other hierarchs joining him include: Archbishop Nathaniel, Ruling Hierarch of the Romanian Orthodox Episcopate of America; Bishop Thomas, Diocese of Charleston, Oakland and the Mid-Atlantic, Bishop Melchisedek, Diocese of Pittsburgh and Western PA and others (confirmation pending).

The conference is drawing some of the best leadership emerging in the American Orthodox world, many of whom have tackled the complex issues of how to live as an Orthodox Christian in American society. They include such notables as Father Thomas FitzGerald, Dean of Holy Cross School of Theology, author Frederica Mathewes-Green; John Maddex, CEO of Conciliar Media Ministries; author/lecturer Kyriaki FitzGerald, columnist Terry Mattingly, and others.

Other panelists include Fr. Johannes L. Jacobse, Nicholas Katich, Fr. Justin Mathews, Peter Marudas, George Michalopoulos, Mother Sarah Elizabeth Oftedel, Fr. Antonio Perdoma and Father Nicholas Apostola and more.
