"We have concluded that when the principle of phyletism (i.e. ecclesiastical nationalism) is juxtaposed with the teaching of the Gospel and the constant practice of the Church, it is not only foreign to it, but also completely opposed, to it. We decree the following in the Holy Spirit: 1. We reject and condemn racial division, that is, racial differences, national quarrels and disagreements in the Church of Christ, as being contrary to the teaching of the Gospel and the holy canons of our blessed fathers, on which the holy Church is established and which adorn human society and lead it to Divine piety. 2. In accordance with the holy canons, we proclaim that those who accept such division according to races and who dare to base on it hitherto unheard-of racial assemblies are foreign to the One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church and are real schismatics." "As far as the Charter is concerned, it most defiantely was a scandal, otherwise there wouldn't have been a lawsuit and an exodus of people from the GOA. Plus, it completely went against the incorporation laws of New York State."

Well, clearly, the State of New York did not agree with your assesment as the Archdicoese won on every count in all of the lawsuits brought by OCL.

More than likely, the "mets" were elevated to bring things in line with Orthodox ecclesiology. MAking them the true authority within their metropolises as opposed to de facto auxiliaries to the archbishop. We are set up now, more like the semi-autonomous Church of Crete. In any case, it surely was not done to "buy their silence" as they did not keep silent for long. BTW, trust a priests who is too quick to speak ill of their bishop. Even if they have a lousy bishop, it is not appropriate for them to do so (except under the most EXTREME of circumstances, and this is surely not one of those). It's like I tell Fr. Vlahos many times, if the GOA is so corrupt and doing so many inaapropriate things, how can a clergyman of any self respect and integrity remain under it's jurisdiction? I am quite sure someone like Fr. Vlahos could get a release to join another jurisdiction.

Frankly, as I have stated before, the whole ROCOR-OCA dual existance makes no sense. Nor does the MP having parishes in the jurisdiction of another "Autocephalous Church". Oh well, we shall see the interesting developments to come.

Re Met Philip, it is what it is, some of us saw it sooner than others, but hopefully they are settling down and gettin' back to "business". As I have told Dean many times, as long as we keep putting our faith in this bishop or that as the "bright spot" or the "way to unity" etc. we will be disspointed. Whether they be a +PHILIP or a +JONAH or anyone else. They are human only human and cannot do it all.

    Have a great Sunday.
