Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko met with Pope Benedict XVI today at the Vatican, according to the Interfax-Religion website.
This private meeting between the Ukrainian Premier and the Pope was held in the papal personal library and lasted for a half-hour.
Tymoshenko had met earlier in Rome today with representatives of the Ukraine. She told them she planned to discuss with the Pope "relations between the Church and the state, to exchange opinions about measures taken in the world to strengthen moral values."
Eastern Orthodoxy is the primary religion of Ukraine; however, its Orthodox Church is split into two major segments. Part of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church is under the jurisdiction of the Moscow Patriarchate, while another part has been independent, since the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991.
