"We have concluded that when the principle of phyletism (i.e. ecclesiastical nationalism) is juxtaposed with the teaching of the Gospel and the constant practice of the Church, it is not only foreign to it, but also completely opposed, to it. We decree the following in the Holy Spirit: 1. We reject and condemn racial division, that is, racial differences, national quarrels and disagreements in the Church of Christ, as being contrary to the teaching of the Gospel and the holy canons of our blessed fathers, on which the holy Church is established and which adorn human society and lead it to Divine piety. 2. In accordance with the holy canons, we proclaim that those who accept such division according to races and who dare to base on it hitherto unheard-of racial assemblies are foreign to the One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church and are real schismatics." Rome's Uniatism OK when it involves Protestants?

    Just wondering---

The Anglican Communion, about to be dented by Rome's new idea for Anglican-use "personal ordinariates," has the following "interests" on Orthodox Canonical Territory as commonly understood by Orthodox (more or less):

    • The Church of the Province of Central Africa
    • Province de L'Eglise Anglicane Du Congo
    • Hong Kong Sheng Kung Hui (Hong Kong Anglican Church) -- claimed by MP and EP mission
    • The Nippon Sei Ko Kai (The Anglican Communion in Japan)
    • The Episcopal Church in Jerusalem and the Middle East
    • The Anglican Church of Kenya
    • The Anglican Church of Korea -- claimed by MP/ROCOR and EP
    • The Church of the Province of Myanmar -- claimed by EP mission
    • The Church of Nigeria
    • The Church of North India -- claimed by EP mission (Some notes say Rome received a whole Anglican diocesan structure out of Amritsar back in 1982, but I can't locate details.)
    • The Church of Pakistan -- claimed by EP mission
    • The Church of the Province of Rwanda
    • The Church of the Province of South East Asia -- claimed by EP mission
    • The Church of South India -- claimed by EP mission
    • The Anglican Church of Southern Africa
    • The Episcopal Church of the Sudan
    • The Anglican Church of Tanzania
    • The Church of Uganda
    • The Church of the Province of West Africa
    • The Church of Ceylon -- claimed by EP mission
    • The Episcopal Church in the Philippines -- EP and Antioch missions
    • The Church of England, Diocese of Gibraltar in Europe, Archdeaconry of Germany and Northern Europe, consisting of [among other countries]: ...Estonia (claimed by MP and EP), Finland, Latvia (MP), Lithuania (MP).
    • The Church of England, Diocese of Gibraltar in Europe, Eastern Archdeaconry, consisting of [among other countries]: Albania, Armenia (Georgian parishes), ...Azerbaijan (GP and MP), Belarus (MP), Bosnia and Herzegovina (Serbia), Bulgaria, Croatia (Serbia), Czech Republic, Georgia, Greece, Hungary (recently litigated by EP), Kosovo (Serbia), Macedonia (Serbia), Moldova (claimed by MP and Romania), Montenegro (Serbia), Poland, Romania, Russia, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia (Serbia), Turkey (parts EP, Antioch, Georgia), Turkmenistan (MP), Ukraine (MP), and Uzbekistan (MP).
    • Not to mention territory claimed by The OCA:
      • The Anglican Church of Canada
      • The Episcopal Church (TEC), also known as the Protestant Episcopal Church in the United States of America (PECUSA), is also the Province of the Anglican Communion in ... Taiwan (EP mission)....

    • As well as the plethora of breakaway Anglican groups forming in recent years/decades/generations....
    • And also the EP's own claims to basically the whole planet outside its recognized boundaries of Autocephalous Orthodox Churches....

And if there's any doubt what happens to an "Ordinariate" under Rome after a time:

In 1913 the Ordinariate of United States of America, Faithful of the Oriental Rite (Ukrainian), was created; as you can see, in just 1924 it was promoted to the Apostolic Exarchate of United States of America, Faithful of the Oriental Rite (Ukrainian), and in 1958 it basically became the Ukrainian Metropolia of the USA with first 2, then 3, and now 4 dioceses. Other ethnic or liturgical Ordinariates exist and have existed, usually as building-blocks to "something bigger." Look at the category of "Apostolic Exarchate" here, almost always used in the 20th century as a proto-diocese. They may say that Anglican ones will remain part of the Latin Church, but get enough of them and they're sure to want build into a new "Particular Church," an even bigger alternative to the Anglican Communion ... or just walk back out on Rome. Into Metropolitan JONAH's arms? Time will tell....

Considering the smallness of some Latin and Uniate communities in some places, Anglican-use RC communities could represent a significant percentage increase there for Rome -- though I say this not knowing the "churchmanship" of the Anglicans in those particular regions, ie, High/Broad/Low or "liberal/conservative." Also, since those in the Third World seem pretty Evangelical (presumably anti-papal, unless it's the Abp of Nigeria running for Prot. Pope of Alexandria!); plus our own numbers there are pretty low generally; so alot of the above could be just symbolic "intrusions," like the thousands of other Protestant and "Catholic" and "Orthodox" groups there already.

    Still, curiouser and curiouser....

So, do we object to uniatism because traditionally it steals sheep from us, or because it's objectively wrong, maybe even theologically?

    ---Leo

PS: One might say, what about Western converts to Orthodoxy like me? Well, for one thing, o/Orthodoxly we might dispute Rome's "canonical territory" expanding by Frankish military might, genocide, etc., to so much of the world. Even that Rome has ANY c.t. since falling away from the Church -- the position THEY took against us for so many centuries. Except supposedly we have lots of "empirical theology"....
