Posted by KP on 9/18/2006, 6:16 pm http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/akcpetshop/ Nutshell, since AKC reg puppies are being sold in stores and no one can stop that, the AKC basically wants to use the opportunity to at least try and educate buyers on better dog care. Many are very worried about this and though we understand the AKC's idea, it still does not look good for them. Many do not agree and feel they are going down a slipper slope as it still looks like they are endorsing pet shops though they say they are not. We know free trade issues and therefore they cannot stop people who meet min requirements from registering AKC pups and selling them at stores or selling AKC registerable pups through stores, but it still looks like they are saying do not support stores, go to breeders and rescues but then saying let's teach the stores to educate buyers. This was confirmed with a long-time breeder and was brought to her attention by a judge and was posted on Dog Politics as unconfirmed, but it has been since with a call to AKC Deegates. So, the AKC has gone from the betterment and honoring of the purebred dog to the denegration and support of puppy mills and pet shops. This is not the AKC of the past that worked to educate why good breeders should be contacted and shops avoided. This is the blog on Dog Politics: http://dogpolitics.typepad.com/my_weblog/2...etland_per.html This is what was written by an AKC judge and her name was taken off as no one wants to cause any retribution for her from the AKC. But PLEASE cross post this, and contact the AKC to voice your displeasure. AKC Operations Center AKC Headquarters AKC Customer Care Public Education: Communications Original email: Thought some of you might care about this....after promoting the High Volume Breeders business and getting behind PAWS, the AKC has now outdone itself. Today at the Delegates meeting, the AKC announced that the Board has signed a contract with Petland Discount stores to educate store employees about the importance of AKC registration. The plan is that the store will charge the AKC registration fee at the time of sale and register the puppy on line. My understanding is that the Board voted 12 to 1 to enter into this contract. Write, email, call your Board members, especially contact Dennis Sprung...tell them to activate the termination clause in the contract...that we, the constituents and customers of the AKC, do NOT want the AKC involved in business with a pet shop!
