Sheltie Only Herding Clinic (for Novice and Beginner dogs)
Central Indiana Shetland Sheepdog Club
presents March 26, 2005
Learn the terms and basic concepts of modern day herding such as:
square flank, outrun, flight zone, pressure & balance, and driving. This is the perfect foundation course to build all your training around. The clinic includes 3 parts: a morning lecture, student participation in a “flight-zone” identification exercise, and the greater part of the day is devoted to working with your dogs on sheep.
The clinic is recommended for all beginners and novice-level herding enthusiasts. Intermediate and advanced herders can gain new insights on their current methods -- new ideas on techniques may help strengthen your dog’s foundation skills.
8:00 am -- Lecture and classroom demonstrations. The basics are explained in everyday language partnered with simple, yet amazingly effective visual aids to help you see what herding is all about. Past students, both with and without herding experience, rave about how the lecture session alone is worth the price of admission.
The class moves outside for a practical demonstration in natural stock movement to show how
approaching people, dogs and/or other stimuli affect movement of sheep, ducks or other herd animals. This is followed by some hands-on experimenting by students in pairs on stock (without their dogs). You will see for yourself how the basics concepts from the morning lecture all fit together in a real-life situation as you learn to “read the stock”.
In all cases your dogs will get more than one opportunity on the stock as time, daylight and weather allow. The instructors will give you plenty of feedback on what herding instinct your dog displays and recommendations on how to proceed with further training.
Working spots are $50 for the day and are limited to:
· 15 Beginner dogs
---If you have questions on experience level, please call/e-mail to discuss.
---All working sports are reserved on a first-come first-served basis with a $25 non-refundable deposit. Balance of payment is due 7 days before the clinic.
Audit spots are $30 for the day – unlimited.
---Attend the lecture portion
---Watch the practical demonstrations and working sessions
Upon receiving your deposit, you will be sent a page listing the Property Rules and other information to help make your visit to Dogwood Farm enjoyable and safe.
