We had sheltie that we worked with for the first 1 year walking his boundaries and there are days he will be outside for hours and never leave the unfenced yard. Of course in the first few years they are very excitable to passers by. But from my experience they listen very well to commands as long as they are taught from an early age 4-6 months old.
