Marvel was/is Timely, Atlas and Marvel. Bill Everett originally created Namor as a work for hire package for the company Funnies, Inc. and Namor was originally to appear in a comic to be given away in movie theaters. One issue was published and when it didn't work out, that 1st Sub-Mariner story was reprinted in Marvel Mystery Comics 1 with extra pages. For more info and a really enjoyable read, try to grab a copy of Les Daniels' Marvel: Five Fabulous Decades of the World's Greatest Comics, and an earlier book, Comix: A History of the Comic Book in America. Both are probably available thru your local library. Another source is Jim Steranko's History of Comics vol. 1. It's out of print but libraries can usually get a copy. Perfect summer reading!
