Sub-Mariner wastes little time! He becomes a meteor, a lightning bolt, a streak across the midday sky..speeding toward the coast line of America. FF vol.1 #6.
Seems to me like Stan and Jack thought Namor could fly faster than the 40mph the handbook credits him for. Although Stan Lee gave no numbers in this instance, Namor, in this issue, was mistaken for a Polaris missile by an airliner crew. So, can we surely believe that Stan intended for us to believe that Namor has the ability to fly as fast as a polaris missile? Well, I don't think Namor can fly 8,000mph as the first A-1 tactical prototype that the U.S. launched in September 1959 could. But, Namor easily outflew and dodged the same airliner mentioned above. I like to believe Namor can fly at around super sonic speed. Stan's reference to Namor, being meteor-like and a streak across the sky, makes believing he does indeed have super-sonic speed, sound reasonable. Flying 40mph would not stir references such as meteor like and a streak across the sky but super sonic speed would.
