Hi Paula,
Thanks for asking.
We run in two winter XC leagues. Essex on a Saturday afternoon and South Essex on a Sunday morning. There is also the Vets champs, County champs etc.
The Essex league is perceived to be the higher standard, but in reality you come up against the same people in both. If you are half marathon standard you would fit in well to either.
Races are long established and well organised by Essex officials, Saturdays are normaly 5-6 miles, Sundays 4-5 miles. They are run around local country parks and usualy involve the odd hill or two.
Sunday races are followed by tea and cakes laid on by the organising club. Not everyone liked the new course at Dunton last weekend but nobody complained about the cakes!
If you are used to mainly road running you will find it more difficult, BUT it will get you fitter and stronger. The main thing is to ensure you have the correct footwear. Your group leader will be able to advise you.
I'm sure others can fill in anything I have missed.
Cheers,
Keith
