i think AWE has some great songs on it, but they were 'overcooked' some what. i think theres some beautiful irony that mccabe has accused in the past of 'overcooking' songs and then ashcroft goes totally overboard with the production (perhaps he was over conpensating for what he described as the added 'dimensions' of having other band members writing with you). a personal favourite on the album is 'you on my mind in my sleep' but not because of the album version but because of the solo acoustic effort from the four track from the independent (although that is possibly the worst version lucky man ever). like you mention john, its always interesting to hear or read ashcrofts interviews and it seems weird to think that he was suprised (in an interview on new zealand radio) that ppl were getting into his stripped down sets so much; but it seems like his calling is in beatiful, simple, honest, heart felt ballads, so why he felt he had to bury them under a wall of frankly uninspiring instrumentation is obviously beyond us. i hope that his next record shows him as the great song writer that he is and that it reinspires your belief in him again
