Friendly competition
Heath Farwell was voted the Vikings Special Teams Player of the Year in 2007 after collecting twice as many special teams tackles as anyone else on the team.
Farwell finished with a career-high 32 special-teams tackles, easily out-distancing teammates Vinny Ciurciu and Charles Gordon at 15 tackles. Farwell, who missed all of last season because of a knee injury, leads the team in special teams tackles again with seven, but newcomer Kenny Onatolu is close behind with six.
"We really haven't had any bets going with each other or anything, but I always notice if he sees me around the pile, when we get to the sidelines Heath will be like, 'Did you make that tackle?'" Onatolu said. "I know it's kind of a fun competition. I'll see him make a play and I'm like, 'Man, I have to go make the next play.' "
After spending the past two seasons with the CFL's Edmonton Eskimos, Onatolu earned a roster spot on the strength of his special-teams play.
"Kenny has done a great job," Farwell said. "He's one of the first guys down the field. He's willing to learn, and he's making a lot of plays for us."
