I've just spent the last 2 hours or so bouncing around the various Viking websites. Reading the fan reactions.
WOW! No really!!! WOW!!!!
How short the memory span of the avg viking fan!
many complaining the vikings NEVER spend in free agency. Others are whinning the vikings can't rebuild through the draft because the team never drafts well.
HELLO PEOPLE????? The wilfs have spent like drunken sailors since arriving in minnesota. It was highly publicized that they told Childress they would go get him whatever he wanted. Want a qb? poof, heres 100 million Brett favre. Want a DE? heres 70 million jarred allen. they resigned pat williams, kevin williams, bryant mckinnie, antoine winfield, ej henderson. Overspent for berrian, brought back randy moss. signed steve hutchinson to the richest FA guard contract in nfl history. These moves combined to slot the vikings into a ridiculous position of high fan expectations. All these moves came at the request of defacto GM brad childress. Now if childress could have drafted some good talent to learn the ropes behind some of these studs, then perhaps the vikings wouldnt now be running on empty. Have the fans and the state rewarded the free spending wilfs with a new stadium? to take them from being the least valuable team in the nfl? Oh hell no!
as for the draft. prior to the childress years, the vikings actually drafted pretty good. Childress, as you remember, inherited the "plumb job" of the nfl. He promptly resorted to drafting duds and reching for crud. It is what it is. and it is that aftermath we are now in.
To blame the current draft studio for the mess were in is unfair! let spielman do his thing. this will be his 1st draft since his 1st year in miami that is of his doing. I would suggest that spielman has learned alot watching the failures in Miami and of childress unfold infront of him. Sure spielman had some input, but he always lost the battles. TJ was a childress move, gerhart a childress move, the only guy spielman says he lobbied hard for and won was Tyrell johnson. whom most thought was a steal when the vikes drafted him.
Let the man do his job, it's the begining of a new era. many likely don't realize this. The wilfs by scuttling the triangle of authority and outting spielman in charge have in essence admitted they made a mistake. Be happy they had sense enough to admit and start anew!!!! many owners, ie snyder and jones. continue to do the same thing year in year out despite it repeatedly not working.
what a fickle fan base! " we want you to spend like snyder, but house you in the cheapest diggs the nfl plays in".
I sense many viking fans see 2012 as a lost year. Why bother to watch. I would counter by telling you that think like that that bill walshs 1st year as gm, the niners went 5-11. The locals were calling for his head for drafting a diminutive qb from notre dame that all nfl scouts didn't believe possessed the talent to be a real nfl strting qb.
Im not saying spielman is walsh, but for the love of larry, give the guy a chance before you give up on him!
for what it's worth, I gotta sneaky hunch that spielman is going to nail this rebuild!
