Scotty Bowman once said something to the effect "The team that wins has better players getting off their bus."
Then again, it was Bowman who as much as invented and implemented the left wing lock, which sort of goes to my argument that players and scheme are the answer.
Again, when the NHL changed from a clutch and drag league, the Red Wings adapted and changed their style of play.
I also don't believe in Rookies in the NFL anymore. most 1st - 5th round picks are 3-4 years starters in the NCAA. Coming off another 2-4 years playing in high-school. The Fundamentals should be well versed, now get them to working in your scheme and make them adapt - teach them.
Oh, and by innovation, that does not mean dropping Kevin Williams or Jared Allen into coverage on a zone blitz. Kinda like taking Adrian Peterson and Percy Harvin off the field on 3rd and goal at the three yard line. Okay, now that I really remember last season, I'm just getting more pissed off.
