By most accounts, Ober had a dominant spring.
Yet, the decision isn't as much about abilities as it is the other Twins 5 starting pitchers are veterans. Vets don't carry those minor league options. Instead, they become exposed via the waiver wire.
Perhaps Young Meadows found himself in that same option/ numbers crunch?
It's similar to the NFL practice squad rules. If a veteran player is part of the puzzle. Teams must retain them at the MLB level or risk losing them. MLB goes further, protecting young "assets" with the option clause. I wonder how many careers have been stunted bc a vet & his guaranteed salary almost demand to be kept at the big league level.
Pro players, theyre half athlete, half poker chip. Aren't they?
Or, as Adrian Peterson once said. It's akin to modern day slavery. Don't mistake that statement for a social commentary concerning lifestyle. No. It's a comment concerning the ownership of a human being.
It feels unamerican.
Yet, what other options is there? Without the systems in place. The tigers, twins, pirates etc would 100% be the minor league affiliate of the yanks, Mets & dodgers.
Cheers, a toast to slavery😟
