A lot.
He was better than the 2 that followed- imo.
Childress was arrogant to the point of detriment.
Mostly, dont all these "top of the food chain" guys have to have a level of arrogance with mega ego as icing.
But in the end. Living by the sword does = falling on your own sword. Nobody can ever get it right every time. Maybe- the perfect coach is a guy that can self analyze his own arrogance, defer his ego and find wisdom by identifying those moments where it is his own arrogant ego pushing him to make a decision that his gut is telling him opposite.
Thats a very difficult thing to do. Itd take a person of high emotional intelligence, very self aware, probably not attributes associated with athletics.
Mostly, coaches & athletes ride that edge gained by fully believing in themselves being the best. Which by its nature is an illusion. I think Andy Reid is that guy. Or the closest thing to it, as evidenced by how easily the chiefs transitioned to the Mahomes offense.
I watched houston some this year. Listened to a few Demecco Ryans pressers. Interesting cat.
Understated demeanor. Doug Pederson is similar.
I wish the Vikings had hired one of those 2 guys.
My read on the 2 is like Andy Reud, they both lack the stubborn side of ego. Which was the Lions undoing sunday past.
In actuality, what Campbell said. "I took a gamble, & In the same moment I'd do it again."
He's not wrong. Especially that 1st 4th down fail. He read the room correct. Sf had marched & scored after the 2nd half kickoff. Matching that score keeps the momentum on the lions side. And the play was there. Reynolds just dropped the pass. If the lions convert there. At the very least- more time is burned off the clock and possibly a Td salts the game away, or a fg attempt of 50 yds becomes a 30 yd chipshot.
We say it all the time around here. Please coach to win. Thats what campbell was attempting there.
The second one is different. Not tying the game. With 9? minutes left. That was a tactical error. It allowed sf to go up by 2 scores without enough time for detroit to accomplish 2 scoring drives.
Yeah- in that moment. Campbell allowed his ego to guide him to a stubborn mistake. Tis a shame.
Im not a fan of whats been said inside the kerby joseph thing. But I do like campbell & the style of team Brad Holmes built. If the vikings had what the lions have right now. We'd all be really happy. Probably many would be dogging on Goff for the same reason kirko gets dogged. In reality. Goff played a very good game. He's not Pat Mahomes. But Goff is and played plenty good enough to win that game.
As we've seen the past 2 weeks. Nobody is Patrick Mahomes. And none of these other coaches are Andy Reid.
Barring unforseen disaster. The repeat is bear certainty. Shanahan? Is he self aware enough to outcoach Reid. Create a game plan for 1st half that catches kc off guard. and then have an answer for half 2 adjustment By Reid & Spagnolo?
I dont see it happening. But they tell us Shanny is a genius.
As usual, im rambling. Sorry.
My point tho, KOC can learn much from this moment if hes paying attention to the sport psychology of this moment.
Moreso- kwesi & the wilfettes can learn a shit ton from the lions if they dissect the various moves made by the lady owner & the gm brad holmes. Very methodical. As Tice used to say... Was it Tice?
Plan the work, work the plan. Brilliance in action as well as simple in its brilliance. And- ahead of schedule.
Meathead may be seen as a negative. But it also believes in building a complete team that creates the opportunity to be a great team without a hof qb at the helm.
Isnt that what the vikings have been trying to do for most of the past 30 years. Win a superbowl with a lesser qb. The Lions are very close. Another good draft from Holmes & they will be a sb favorite in 2024. Heck- they probably already are.
Especially if Campbell can get his tactical side of coaching refined.
