I disagree with his view on kirko holding the ball too long. I view the o-line couldnt give him 2.5 seconds on 3rd down must have moments.
Does it matter anymore?
It will for darnold & any qb they draft.
2 seconds is the minimum. Every down. Kirko was getting hit at 1.5 seconds some of those 3rd downs. Hell, his back foot plant hadnt happend before garret bradburry was watching his rear view mirror as kirko got walloped by some dt's bull rush.
Yes- the overall theme is correct. And too much emphasis is placed on college production, utilization of skill set while maintaining sound mechanics. Sure sure, off platform is nice. But the majority of pass plays are timing, windows & accuracy.
Mechanics can be fixed. Fixing mechanics can uptick accuracy. Other things- what you see is going to be the get for their entire career. Like mental acuity- processing speed, pocket presence. Slide steps & climbing the pocket. Standing in & delivering. Release time.
I maintain one "skill" trumps all others.
With it, any qb has a chance. W/o it- no qb does that skill is brain power.
Qb smarts is different than an IQ test. It shows up on college tape. It jumps out at you. 1 or 2 bonehead moves. Bad reads- didnt see a guy. Or like daunte. Throw it away on 4th & goal, thinking theres a 5th down?
Qb's that show those things repeatedly are going to continue to be daunte dip shits as pro's.
Low skill qb's that seembto always read the field correctly- the Brock Purdy's, Nick Mullins of the world. They may piss you off by their lack of arm strength. But they will win you a shit ton of games bc theyre 95% percentile decision makers.
This is the reason im higher on Nix, Penix & Rattler than every qb not named Caleb Williams.
Caleb Williams game tape from 2023? Its reason to be very leary. But take into account that he likely wanted to enter the draft last year. But his NIL$ & loyalty to coach/teamates kept him at usc. He couldnt improve his stock in '23. All he could do is harm himself.
Turn on the tape from 2021 & 2022. The dude balled out for sketchy teams. Add in the onvious Payrick Mahommes comparisons. Really, there are 2 qb's in the leagues history with that houdini aspect. Calebs college film is better than Mahomes college tape.
He is the overwhelming #1 pick bc of that. Period. Nobody before, nobody since- gives a team legit hope they can develop Caleb into Mahomes 2.0... nobody gives a fig about his '23 college film beyond he made it thru without serious injury.
All the hype on Daniels, Maye, McCarthy. Not a 1 carried his team with their passing skills.
Nix, Penix, Rattler did.
Who cares about a qb's athletic ability if they cant be really good at the #1thing required of a qb. Passing the ball from tight pockets, pressure in your face. Accurately into tight windows...consistently.
We've witnessed plenty of "that" qb. From Mike Vick thru RG3. Malik Willis, Mitch Trubisky...Justin Fields & trey lance etc.
Great, your qb runs 4.4 and is built like Herman Munster....but can he complete that 4th & 11 pass? If he cant. Basically he's worthless.
Jayden Daniels- skinny Justin Fields.
Drake Maye- mitch Trubisky.
JJ McCarthy. The knock on him- inexperience. Is also a plus. Theres not enough tape there to understand if hes got some drew breez in him or is He a stronger armed kenny pickett.
Teams that love him see a taller Drew Brees. Hate him then you see Drew Lock or Pickett.
