We have been with our kids and continue to go back every few years. We usually stay in Legian (Tunjung Villas or the Residence Jayakarta). The Tunjung was pretty good, but the pool was not that crash hot when we last went (far too much chlorine, even for Bali). When the kids were younger we used to stay at the Residence Jayakarta (note it is the Residence) in a 1 room apartment. The pools are really big and very clean, the breakfast was great and we rarely had to eat lunch because we were still full. The pools are a 3 minute stroll from the room, but that was a good thing when we had young kids. The taxi trip into Kuta is only about 2 or 3 dollars (AU) and the road the Tunjung and Jayakarta are on is great for shopping and eating.
Hope this all helps a bit.
BTW, be a bit careful of some of the money changers, the ones where they are in the back of a shop can sometimes make a mistake and come up a bit short if you don't count the money carefully (ask for large notes).
