Single parent travel

I am a single mum, with a 3yo child. I really want to visit bali for the first time in the next 12mths. Has anyone travelled with kids as a single parent (on a budget). Any tips? Which areas are good for kids - we want to be close to everything but also safe and not right in the party precinct.
