Born in 1940 and raised in Pitsea I spent many pleasurable days as a child on One Tree Hill. From what I have read the hill supposedly gained its name from a large single ash tree that grew there in early times. It was a really magic place and shared by many of the locals with its open space and breathtaking views. At the right time of year the wooded areas would be carpeted with bluebells and primroses etc. Plus there was always an abundance of wildlife for a child to marvel at. Close by were the sand pits which were considered dangerous and out of bounds. As a young boy I also remember seeing German POW's walking around the area exercising from the camp close by. Being a Laindon boy Brian you will no doubt be familar with some of this stuff.
I have lived in Australia now for 43 years, and when next visiting the UK it would be a tragic experience for me to find that natural area further decimated.
