The late forties and very early fifties were the best times for Basildon, you still had lots of green fields, Cambells buses with their wooden seats struggled up the hill from Pitsea Station. The war memorial was in the centre of Pitsea not hidden away in a park as it is now. Sharps fish shop in Pitsea High Street where we got fish and chips after the cinema and then the long trek home to Basildon for some people - yes they really were fitter and walked miles. I used to walk from Craylands School (why did they shut that) to Pitsea just to walk home with friends. In Basildon many people lived in unmade roads and helped each other, I remember my Aunty's house, outside toilet with squares of News of the World hung on a hook so you could read while you waited
