I started work at the Locarno Ballroom in the box office on the last weekend Dave Clark was the resident band.I nearly died from shock when I saw the queue to get in that first night, it went right round the bus station to the fish and chip shop. I worked in the box office from 1964-1970 and have many happy memories of working there. In fact I met my 2nd husband there, and this August we will be celebrating 40 years together. I am in contact with 3 of the under managers from my time there, Tony Dow, John Porter and Jimmy Vail.My husband went on to open a mobile butchers, Rays Mobile Butchers, that served Laindon and Langdon Hills. We moved to Norfolk in 1989 after many happy years in Basildon. Our son and daughter Sharon and John both attended Lee Chapel South school and later Woodlands. Sadly our son passed away this March aged 44 (from first marriage)and it has been a sad time for us.We received so many cards and phone calls following his death from friends and neighbours from Basildon it was a great comfort. Would like to hear from anyone who worked at the Locarno during my years there.
