I have fond memories of a carefree childhood in Basildon when it was still quite a rural place. We often used to go to One Tree Hill for picnics - sometimes walking all the way down Dry Street. Quite an adventure for a twelve or thirteen year old. there used to me a monument on top of the hill with a brass plaque that pointed out the distant views of Fobbing, Corringham, Tilbury and other exciting places!
