Hiya Shaun, I remember The Gun very well. It was ay the top of the hill going through Bowers Gifford towards Benfleet. I used to play Sunday League footbal for the Basildon Post Office team and we used to play on the Eversly Road pitches behind The Bull pub which is at the bottom of the hill in Bowers Gifford. After the games we would go to The Gun for a swift shandy (cos it was cheaper there) before going home. I believe it shut down and was re-opened as an eating house called 'The Musketeer' or something like that. Havn't been there for years now so it may well be gone like so many of the good old haunts we used to know.
